Anyone who’s ever paid in Bitcoin knows it’s as easy as whipping out their credit card! By paying in Bitcoin, you free yourself from the bank and the government—in other words, you build financial independence. Many retailers are beginning to anticipate this trend by increasingly accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. Most recently, several “Carrefour City” stores have started accepting Bitcoin for groceries, an initiative led by independent franchisees.

To date, this initiative remains local. “It’s not part of a national Carrefour strategy,” a Carrefour manager explains. However, the movement to democratize Bitcoin seems well and truly underway in France.

The Rise of Cryptocurrency Payments

The use of cryptocurrencies is gradually becoming a part of everyday life in France. In Seine-Maritime, several Carrefour City stores now accept Bitcoin as payment for groceries, an initiative spearheaded by some independent franchisees.

However, this experiment remains local.

Consumers are increasingly open to cryptocurrencies.

With nearly 10% of French people holding cryptocurrencies, more and more businesses are seeking to meet this new demand. It is in this context that several Carrefour City stores located in Seine-Maritime have decided to accept Bitcoin payments.

The Carrefour City Caudebec-Les-Elbeuf, which opened on October 8, 2025, has become the sixth store in the region to offer this payment method, according to BFM Crypto. If you want to understand Bitcoin and its economic benefits better, watch the YouTube video “Satoshi VS Fiatello.”

A local franchisee initiative

The project was initiated by Omer Diner, manager of the Carrefour City store in question:

We use Bitcoin daily, so I am offering the solution in my stores.

He is already considering extending the system to his other point of sale in Caudebec. For the retailer, this is a response to growing customer demand for fast, decentralized payments.

The technical solution: Swiss Bitcoin Pay

The system is based on the Swiss Bitcoin Pay app, which allows stores to accept Bitcoin payments via a QR code scanned at the time of payment.

This system facilitates transactions and appeals to a younger clientele familiar with financial technologies.

An Experiment That Remains Isolated

Despite this local enthusiasm, the Carrefour group clarified that this was only a one-off initiative:

This is an isolated situation involving a few franchised stores that are keen to test it,” said a spokesperson for the brand.

Carrefour does not currently plan a national rollout, emphasizing that most customers still prefer bank cards or cash.

While Bitcoin payments in some Carrefour City stores remain marginal today, they illustrate an underlying trend: the gradual normalization of cryptocurrencies in everyday life.

Ultimately, these local initiatives could serve as a testing ground for future, broader strategies in French mass retail.
